Why Tailoring Your Resume Is Worth the Extra Work

Yes, it takes longer. Yes, it’s tempting to hit send on the same PDF fifty times and call it a job search.

Yes, it is a lot more work.

But the truth is, a resume that’s written for everyone is really written for no one.

Hiring managers can tell if you are sending the same resume everywhere.

When your summary reads like a generic overview and your bullet points could belong to any candidate in any industry, your application blends into the pile — not because you’re underqualified, but because nothing in your resume speaks directly to their problem.

And you certainly won’t stand out…and you want to stand out!!

Tailoring doesn’t mean rewriting from scratch every time.

It means reading the job posting carefully and asking: what do they actually care about?

Then making sure your resume answers that question clearly and near the top.

It might be swapping the order of two bullet points so your most relevant experience leads.

It might be adjusting a job title in your summary to match their language, or cutting a section that’s impressive but irrelevant to this role. Small shifts. But they signal something important: that you paid attention, and that you want this job — not just a job.

The applications that land interviews are almost never the ones sent fastest.

They’re the ones that felt like they were written for the reader and put some effort in the resume.

Take the extra ten minutes. Your competition probably won’t!!
