For Canadian youth entering the workforce
Most young job seekers apply late, write no cover letters, and never follow up.
If you do the opposite of those three things, you are already ahead of the majority of applicants — regardless of how much experience you have.
Here is what actually works when you are young and just getting started.
Apply within the first 48 hours
Hiring managers often review applications as they come in, not all at once at the deadline. Being early signals enthusiasm and gets your name in front of a real person before the pile gets overwhelming.
PRO TIP
Job Bank is Canada’s federal job board and is free to use. Many employers — especially in trades, hospitality, agriculture, and retail — post there first. Check it every morning as part of your routine.
Write a cover letter that mirrors the job posting
Most youth think a cover letter is outdated…this is fundamentally wrong!!!
Taking the time to write a cover letter shows the potential employer you are
serious about seeking a job.
Writing a cover letter demonstrates that you are taking the EXTRA effort to land the job.
Read the posting carefully and use their exact language in your cover letter. If they say “team environment,” use those words. If they mention “customer-facing,” reflect it back. This is not copying — it is showing that you actually read the ad and understand what they need. Keep it to three short paragraphs: who you are, why you fit this specific role, and one sentence confirming you would love to discuss further.
Make your availability crystal clear
One of the most common reasons employers pass on local candidates is uncertainty around availability. If you can start immediately, say so. If you are flexible on hours or shifts, mention it directly. Removing that friction puts you ahead of applicants who never bring it up.
REMEMBER
You do not need years of experience to be a competitive applicant.
Enthusiasm, reliability, and a genuine willingness to learn are qualities employers consistently say they wish more candidates would show.
