3 Practical Tips If You’re Not Hearing Back From Jobs

1.  Apply to fewer jobs—but make them better fits

It sounds counterintuitive, but blasting out 30 applications usually leads to silence.

Why?
Because employers can tell when an application is generic.

Instead:

  • pick roles that actually match your experience (even loosely)
  • read the job description and mirror a few keywords
  • tweak your resume slightly for each role

Simple rule:

5 thoughtful applications > 25 rushed ones

2.Make your resume easier to “scan” (not just better)

Most resumes don’t get read carefully—they get skimmed in seconds.

If yours is:

  • too wordy
  • unclear
  • or missing key info

…it’s easy to skip.

Focus on:

  • clear job titles (“Sales Associate,” not just “Team Member”)
  • bullet points, not paragraphs
  • showing what you did, not just where you worked

Example:

  • ❌ “Worked at a café”
  • ✅ “Served customers, handled orders, and worked in a fast-paced environment”

You’re helping the employer quickly understand:
“Can this person do the job?”

3.Don’t just apply—follow up (almost no one does this)

This is one of the simplest ways to stand out.

After applying, send a short follow-up message or go in person (if appropriate).

Something like:

“Hi, I recently applied for the [position] and just wanted to follow up and express my interest. I’d love the opportunity to speak further.”

That’s it. Short and respectful.

Most people never do this—so when you do, you’re already ahead.

One important thing to remember

If you’re not hearing back, it usually doesn’t mean:

  • you’re not good enough
  • or there are no jobs

It usually means:

something small in your approach needs adjusting

If you’re still not sure what’s holding you back

Sometimes it’s hard to spot the issue on your own—and that’s normal.
